Updated: Mar 7, 2024

In the New Voices section of the British Journal of Psychotherapy, London APC psychotherapist Susan Tyler, explores substance misuse problems among children of alcoholics (COAs), from the perspective of trans generational trauma. Ann Scott, the editor of the journal, comments on the particular focus in the paper on Jung’s concept of the transcendent function. The author suggests this is “a powerful therapeutic tool to link divided and split off parts of the self in a containing matrix”. The editor describes the paper as vividly illustrated with the case of a female COA who had attained sobriety.
